Te Reo, Term 4 2016.

This term we have been learning all about the Marae. We have learnt that…….

  • The Marae is an important focal point for the community.
  • The Marea is a place where tradition and customs can be carried out.
  • The Marae is a place where people can express their values with dignity.
  • There are many kawa ( protocols) that prevail on the marae.
  • Marae kawa (protocols) can differ between maraes and iwi.

We have focused on some key concepts when doing this learning.
These are listed and explained in the table below.

Concept
Definition -
give the meaning of these concepts in your own words.
Tikanga
the correct procedure
Pōwhiri
welcoming ceremony
Tangata whenua
local people
Manuhiri
visitors
TÅ«rangawaewae
home base on the marae
Whanaungatanga
relationships
Manaakitanga
care for other peoples well being
Aroha
love

See this video for an explanation of the roles and responsibilities of people on a marae.

Something I would like to learn more about the marae is……... How many there are throughout New Zealand.

Treaty of Waitangi

This is my compare and contrast map

One thing that I found interesting is that the Treaty was signed in 1840.
Something that I would like to find out is how many people were at the first signing.

Parliament

Parliament

This term we have been learning about Parliament. We have looked at the difference between government and parliament, NZ parliament, who is in government, how our government works and we compared democracy to dictatorship.

Three things that I learned are NZ parliament are:

  • Where people sit.
  • What they all do.
  • How they start the day off.

Here is the link to my compare and contrast map explaining the difference between democracy and dictatorship.

Koru games reflection

For kotu games I was part of the boys Football B team.

My two Koru game highlights were:
* Doing a lot better than expected, because, me and everyone else in the B team were expecting to be placed in last, and out of around 30-ish teams we got 17th.
* my second highlight is that our team worked a lot better together than we did at pratice.

I am most proud of how well I played because after I messed up really badly in the first half of one of our games I came back in the second half and tryed my best.

Some advise for any people going to koru games in future is to always try your best in the sport that you are playing, even if it wasn't your first choice.

Water cycle info report

The water cycle is why it seems like we have infinite amounts of water;  why we will theoretically never run out; why we never have more or less water; it is always the same amount, this cycle is made up of 5 main stages, these stages are: Evaporation, Condensation, Precipitation, Runoff and groundwater. The technical first stage is Evaporation.

Evaporation is when your water in its liquid form changes into a gas, this gas is called water vapor, this happens faster in places with high amounts of humidity, humidity happens in hot places like a rainforest, when the water evaporates into a gas it then floats into the atmosphere, this is when we get to the next 2 stages, Condensation and Precipitation.

Condensation is when the water vapor that is in the atmosphere condenses together, this is what we call clouds, and these clouds are always been filled with more water vapor until they get to full it begins to rain, this process is Precipitation, Precipitation isn't only rain though it is also snow, hail, and sleet, these are all dependent on the temperature when the clouds precipitate, as well as there being multiple types of Precipitation, there is another form of condensation which is fog, fog is a very dark thick cloud that can only be found very low to the ground, and after the Condensation and Precipitation comes the Runoff and Groundwater.

Runoff is when the precipitated water hit the surface of the land and “runs” down into lakes and rivers, the water the gets into river then flows out into the ocean and the cycle resets, the water that runs into lakes instead of flowing into the ocean it stays in the lake until it evaporates, another thing that can happen, instead of the water running down the land is infiltration which is when the water seep through the earth and into underground lakes and river this is called groundwater and once the water is underground it is then stored in a aquifer and transferred to our home to use for toilets, showers, etc.

So now we know the stages of the water cycle and how they work, and that's all right? Wrong something that's even more important for you to know is to never pollute the ocean, lakes or rivers, because sometimes that pollution can be evaporated along with the water, and so it can taint our water supplies and spread disease, so if you don't want that to happen then keep the water clean, we need to look after the water and our own well-being. (don't be dumb).

Conjunctions and punctuation are highlighted like this.

CARE

CARE: My progress so far.

The CARE award that I am working towards is: Bronze.

The one area of CARE that I am doing best in is: classroom   because most of my care ticks are in that area.
The one area of CARE that I need to work harder in is: Library. Because, I dont have any ticks in that area.

To show my leadership qualities I am a role model to others in the CARE values by doing/showing these leadership traits: Motivational and trustworthy.

On the CARE SOLO matrix below I am at this SOLO level: Realtional    because: I can do these without being reminded.

9/10 Reading features of text

WALT: I understand the features of different types of texts and text forms.

Text features are important because:
Without them every text would be the same, but with different words.

Each genre has different text features because:
That way you can differentiate the different genres

The genres that I studied the text features of are:

Music

I can describe the characteristics of music from songs of a different time and place

Over the past 7 weeks I have been learning to describe the characteristics of music from songs of a different time and place

I can describe these characteristics in a piece of music…
  • Harmony- how the singing go's with the instruments.
  • Rhythm- songs pace.
  • Timbre-
  • Form-how the song is put together.
  • Melody-how the song sounds.

Math 9/10 proof

W.A.L.T. Combine simple proportions.

This is proof that I have achieved 90% in my task.
Here is an example or the maths task I had to complete:
What is the percent of increase from 50 to 100. Answer 50.
This is because the 50 is half of 100 and 50 percent is the same as 1/2
so the increase is 50%

short story

For this piece of writing I have focusing on my vocabulary and punctuation.
I have been learning to:
  • use a large productive vocabulary across the curriculum (Year 9/10)
  • Use a wide range of punctuation appropriately and with increasing accuracy. (Year 9/10)

The pieces of my writing that are highlighted green are where I have shown my vocabulary and punctuation goal

My Story...It seemed like a nice and sunny day in Sector 4 of the great Apple city, until the main office building of bean street exploded in a massive ball of fire!! And of course the great Super-Apple new it must of been the Super Evil Villain Rotten Apple!!! So of course Super-Apple rushed down to the ruble to see if he could find the person responsible for the destruction. But when he got he found no one, not even the body's of the people that should have been in the building. The only thing that he could find was a piece of paper with a bunch of words and a derpy picture. On the piece of paper it said meet me at the back alley on sixth street”.

He arrived at the alley to find that no one was there, but he did find a small box lying one of the corners, he picked it up and noticed that his name was written on it, so he opened it up and inside was a small vial with a weird green glowing liquid, there was a label tied to that said “drink meh plz” and for some reason he decided to drink it, at first he felt normal then he fell over and went to sleep. When he woke up he was back at his house lying on the floor, besides feeling a little sleepy he felt pretty normal until he stood up and froze his bedside table after sneezing, at first he thought that he must have been dreaming but soon realized that he was wide awake, and first thing that came to mind was that he needed to gain and master this “power”.

A year later he after mastering his new power, he discover that he could do more than freeze things. He could also fly as well as that he was super strong, and he could even shoot fire from his hands, and in that year he was able to somewhat master all of these powers, and now he thought that he was ready to hunt down Rotten-Apple.

He was in the sky searching for a trace of Rotten-Apple, and just when he was about to give up he spotted a massive trail of destruction that must have been caused by Rotten-Apple, so he followed the trail to the point where it ended, and it ended at a mountain. So stupidly he decided to destroy the mountain until he found something, and what he found was a hatch that was in front of the mountain, so basically he destroyed a mountain for no reason at all. And once he actually saw the hatch he flew straight down into what must have been a trap.

And as he soon found out it was a trap as he fell into a pit of quicksand, at first he thought that he was going to die, but then he remembered that he had acquired super powers so he just froze the quicksand and then broke out using his super strength then flew up to a door that he had seen on his way down to the pit. On the other side of the door was a massive circular room was a small round apple man, as Super Apple closed in on this mysterious man he realized that it was Rotten Apple! Now at this point Super Apple thought that it would be an easy flight now that he had powers, but what he didn't realize was that he wasn't the only one with powers….

“What took you so long?” Demanded Rotten-Apple, obviously annoyed by how long it took Super-Apple to find him. “Sorry, before I could get here I had to escape from one of your traps. No-not that I had any trouble escaping or anything like that.”said Super-Apple trying
(And failing) to hide the truth. “Well, anyway let the battle begin!” Announced Rotten-Apple, “ you seem pretty confident in yourself, but what you may not know, I have super powers.” Announced
Super-Apple feeling pretty cool about himself. “ I know, that's why I went ahead and gave myself my own, powers.” Said Rotten-Apple.
Annoyed at this statement Super-Apple Sprang into attack and froze Rotten-Apple, and that's when the battle finished, Because there was no way to break out of the ice, so the battle kind of finished before it started, and since then the people of sector 4 were able to rebuild  the building that was blown up, and nothing else bad has happened.

9/10 Maths Goal completion Mean, Median, Mode, and Range

This is proof that I did 90% of my IXL task for my maths goal: Find and validate data measures eg Mean, Median, Mode, and Range from appropriate displays.

W.A.L.T apply the techniques of improvisation to a range of different scenarios.

Improvisation techniques that I have used successfully are, quickly coming up with ideas that work and make sense.

The Improvisation technique that I would like to have more practise at is always say YES!!

The thing that I enjoyed most about this unit of learning was playing the one brain game. Because it was fun trying to make a working sentence when you only got to say one word then it was the other persons tern to say a word.

The thing that I found most challenging during this unit of learning was going with someone idea even if it didn't make sense. Because sometimes I thought that their idea was a bit dumb but I still had to go with it.

Exposition Writing. Conclusion and W.A.L.T

W.A.L.T Follow the writing process to write an exposition.

Writing Conclusion.

Personally I do truly believe that Barack Obama is a better leader than Richie McCaw. My reasons for this are 1. Obama is a president while Richie is a rugby captain, 2. Obama has helped and changed millions of lives, while Richie beats an opposing team and keeps the fans happy for a while, and 3. Obama is a better public speaker, which is understandable because most of his job surrounds public speaking. You don't have to agree but this is what I think when comparing these two leaders.

Term 1 integrated learning - Leadership

We have been learning all about What makes a good leader.

We identified that good leaders show 6 main character traits. These are…….
Integrity,Goal Focused,Resilient,Motivational and Active Thinker.

The leadership trait that I think I show the most is Active Thinker. Because I am good at coming up with ideas.

The leadership trait I would most like to develop is Goal Focused. Because sometimes I will
move on and focus on something else instead of doing what I was supposed to do.

Something NEW I have learned about leadership is, If you try hard enough, you can become a leader.

The SOLO level that I reached during this unit of learning is Relational. Because I can compare and contrast the traits of different leaders.

My next step in learning about leadership is to apply everything that I have learned about leadership to my own leadership roles.

Mean,Median,Mode and Range

I can describe mean, median, mode and range

MEAN
Add every number together then
divide it by the the amount of
 numbers that were there.

MEDIAN
Order your numbers from
biggest to smallest and the
middle number is the median.

MODE
mode is the number that
appears the most.

RANGE
take your smallest number and subtract it
from your biggest.

Level 5 author's purpose reading

W.A.L.T I can describe the author's purpose in relation to structure and language choices in                                                  a text and give relevant evidence ( eg vocabulary used )

For reading, the 9/10 standard had to get watch videos about the three different types of writing, they were : Entertain,Persuade and Inform. Then once we had watched the videos we had to choose three out of selection of six texts. Once chosen we would write them down on a doc then we would read the text and decide if the authors purpose was to inform,to persuade or to entertain then we had to write down three specific structure and language choices that the author had made for each text then we had to write down three structure and language similarities and differences. Once we had competed that we were to complete the blog post that you are reading right now.

Striking and Fielding Reflection

WALT: Apply Striking and Fielding activities in a range of sports and activities.

My Strengths

The striking strategies I was able to effectively demonstrate during the games we played were keeping my eye on the ball and Standing side on.

The throwing and catching strategies I was able to effectively demonstrate during the games we played were looking at were you are aiming the ball and pointing to were you want the ball to go.

My Next Steps

To improve my striking of a ball I need to try harder. Because I usually just hit the ball without trying because I don't really care.

To Improve my catching and fielding I need to try harder. Because I usually don't try because I don't want to be a part of the game.

The game that I enjoyed the most was rounders. Because you got to strike and field.

Reading Reflection

Today the year 7/8 team did a reading activity around the flag referendum. For this activity we were given  three texts to read all two were different opinions and the the third held texts for both sides, once we had read the texts we had to copy a doc that the teacher had mad for us, the doc was split in the middle because their are two sides of the argument, on each side we had to write down reasons/evidence for keeping the flag or changing the flag from the texts once we had finished writing the information down we had to highlight one of these four words: Common Knowledge, Personal Opinion, Statistics and expert opinion. We highlighted the one we thought fitted the most with the information we had picked out, next was at the bottom of each side of the doc and it was, Overall the evidence for this side is strong/weak/uncertain… because. for that we had to highlight either strong, weak or uncertain and right why we thought that.

Now for the reflection part. Personally I think that I did pretty average for this activity because at the last part I didn't put more than needed for the "Because"part.

My understanding of The Oaklands Leadership Traits

This post is about my understanding of the Oakland's leadership traits, in total we have 6 traits that we thought were the most important for a good leader to have.

These traits are :
-Integrity-One who is honest and has morals.
-Trustworthy-One that others can trust.
-Resilient-One that doesn't give up.
-Goal Focused-One that is focused on their most important goal.
-Active Thinker-One that actively thinks.
-Motivational-One that motivates them self and others.

Leadership in the Oakland's food forest

                                             W.A.L.T

Show leadership in the Oakland's food forest

On Wednesday the 2nd of March half of the year 8's down to the Oakland's food forest, because we needed to collect all the seeds and pull out all the plants.

We went down to collect seeds with the year 4's, the first thing that the year 8's did was make 4 paper bags each and put them in box to take them to the garden, then we named and dated them for the the when and what plant was in there. Then the year 4's went into the forest and collected seed from the Red Clover and Borage plants and put them in the named and dated bags.

after we were finished and had eaten our lunch the year 8´s went back out to pull out all the plants

Games for the year 1's

Today the year 8's were tasked with coming up with games that they could teach the year 1's. To do so we had to get into groups of two and either get a the paper copy of a worksheet or go into google driver and copy a shared doc version. On this sheet was notes and rules for your game that you would have to write down. Then we went outside and met up with the year 1's. The teacher explained to them what was happening then they sent three/four to each group. Then we took the juniors to a spot suitable for the game that we were going to play, my game was Tricky Tag.

year 9/10 math goal competion

W.A.L.T  Recall commonly used Fractions,Decimal and percentage conversions

Over the past week I have been working towards my math goal which is the W.A.L.T I have written above.
to complete this goal we first had to watch videos explaining the math subject we were working towards.
once we had watched the videos we had to choose between two books which had Math questions related to the goal we had been tasked with. Once all the book work was completed we had to get 100% on two IXL maths games. And what you are looking at now is the final task. Now I need to move onto a new goal.
